Fun in the Ocean Without the Risks

Skimboards were made to ride over shallow water on a beach into oncoming waves.  Skimboarders usually toss their boards ahead of them, run, and then jump on them into the waves.  The sport is challenging and you can get hurt if you aren’t careful, but it’s really fun once you learn to do it safely.

The best part is, there is hardly any chance of shark attacks since you stay so shallow and it’s a water sport you can do even if you aren’t the best swimmer!  There are plenty of skimboarding camps and classes offered by surf shops, so anyone can learn to do it.   Although once made of wood or plastic, most skimboards are now made from carbon fiber.

A company named Zap makes excellent quality, handmade skimboards in Venice, Florida since 1983.  They’re boards are so good that they are used by professionals around the world. Skimboards’ cost varies on weight and style. I personally use an unlimited weight pro board with “art” which costs around $300. Skimboards are specific to your weight and level so make sure you talk to someone who’s in the know or you need to research a little to pick the right one for you. http://zapskimboards.com/boards/
