Day 4 – Become a Workout Dragon – “Eating Crow”
Categories: Get Fit Blog
Having been a runner and a gym-rat since I was 15 years old, I can speak from experience that working out can be exciting, energizing, and rewarding but it can also become really B-O-R-I-N-G!!!! I’ve noticed that we also tend to “do what we like”, not necessarily “do what we need”. We get into our comfort zone and don’t want to try pilates, spinning, running, swimming, etc. I’m #1 on that “don’t bother” list. I vowed to never cycle or spin. I complained that spinning is too complicated to understand what the instructor is shouting out and usually too hard to even get a cycle (you have to show up early or go home). I complained that cycling is too dangerous on the roads with all the crazy drivers. Okay, so there’s some truth in my complaints, but they were also excuses to NOT go outside my comfort zone.
Well, now that I live on the beach and have a lot of outdoor exercise options open to me, I have finally put my helmet on, jumped on a bike, and went cycling with AJ. I procrastinated for about 10 months even though he expressed a constant, genuine interest in doing so. Today was the day. Today was the day that I decided to “Shake it Up” and get my butt on a bike. Actually we did a trial run about a week ago, and here it comes…. I loved it. You heard me, I said, “I loved it!” I can’t believe I’m saying that out loud. I’ve avoided cycling my entire adult life. I’ve done almost every form of exercise you can imagine EXCEPT that, and and here I am saying, “I loved it” (eating crow #1).
We had a pretty heavy rain really early this morning, so I thought I had my excuse locked in! I couldn’t possibly cycle because the roads were wet, so it must be dangerous. AJ wasn’t having it, and told me how great it would be. Damn… he was right again (eating crow #2). The rain cooled and cleaned the roads beautifully and we set off around 8:00-ish. We must have gone 10 miles. Cycling south on A1A alongside the beach was beautiful. Crossing over bridges and through hammocks was cool and rewarding.
AJ has a great hybrid cycle. I have a cruiser. Now that I’m a convert, it looks like I’ll be getting a hybrid soon (eating crow #3). I’ll just keep the cruiser for my super fun sister (a.k.a. The Party Starter – TPS!”) and mount a half-cocunut drink holder on it for her so she can cruise around to all her favorite Ft. Lauderdale spots. I get a new form of fitness, AJ gets finally gets me to do a form of exercise he prefers, and TPS gets new cruising wheels. A win-win-win. Crow is tasting pretty good today.
Do something different. Your dragon, lion, tiger (whatever) can eat crow too.
Stay tuned!
